Abortion
Ending a Pregnancy (Abortion)
There are two main types depending on how far along the pregnancy is:
Medical Abortion (Pill)
This is the most common method and is usually done at home.
You take a pill that stops the pregnancy.
Two days later, you take another pill that causes your uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
• What to expect? You’ll experience cramping and bleeding (like a heavy period) for 4-6 hours. Most people can go home the same day.
• Aftercare: You’ll continue to bleed for about 10 days. You’ll need a follow-up to make sure everything is complete.
Surgical Abortion
This is a small operation and is usually done if you’re more than 12 weeks pregnant.
• How it works:
• You’ll take a pill to soften your cervix.
• The doctor will use a suction tool to remove the pregnancy from your uterus.
• You’ll either be asleep (under general anaesthetic) or awake with pain relief.
Abortion After 13 Weeks
Abortions after 13 weeks are similar to medical abortions but take longer and involve more steps. You take a pill to stop the pregnancy.
Later, you take a second pill to start contractions.
You’ll bleed and pass clots. This can take 6 hours to 2 days.
If there are any remains left, you might need a follow-up procedure called a D&C (dilation and curettage).
After an Abortion – What to Expect
• Bleeding: It’s normal to bleed like a period. You’re more likely to bleed for longer after a medical abortion.
• Avoid infection:
• No vaginal sex.
• No baths (showers are fine).
• No tampons or menstrual cups.
Warning signs to contact a doctor:
• Heavy bleeding.
• Fever.
• Severe stomach pain.
Important: Do a pregnancy test after 3 weeks to make sure the abortion worked.
How You Might Feel
People react differently to abortion. Some feel relieved, while others feel emotional or sad.
It’s okay to need support – if you or your partner feel down or need someone to talk to, contact a healthcare provider or counsellor.
You Can Get Pregnant Again Soon After
Your body can start ovulating just 8 days after an abortion, so you can get pregnant again quickly. Your period will return after 4-6 weeks. Think about birth control options to avoid an unplanned pregnancy in the future.
